Vertical eggbeater (treading water) provides a steady base for
passing, catching, blocking and jumping. Work on keeping a stable
posture while moving forwards, backwards or sideways. Also work
on maintaining this posture, if all or part of the arms are raised
above the surface of the water.

Action |
| Body position |
Head and shoulders out of the water; back straight; head and
shoulders above the hips; hands shoulder width apart close to
the surface in front; in a sitting position |
| Legs and feet |
Knees high and wide; alternating action with lower leg
circling mainly from the knee.
To move sideways, 'pull' with the leading leg and 'push'
with the other. |
| Arms and hands |
Arms scull close to the surface in front of the player;
about shoulder width apart; thumbs down to move hands apart;
thumbs up to bring hands together.
Point fingertips up to move back; point fingertips down to
move forwards.
|
| Timing |
Co-ordination of kicking into an even action; |
| Ball handling |
Raise the catching hand towards the ball at about 60°
to the water; bring the other hand to a more central position;
increase the frequency of the leg kick and scull; use a single
or double breaststroke kick to reach up for the ball and keep
the elbow high. |
