The first whistle
Three
blasts of a shrill whistle pierced the air. The Tigers spread
out along their goal line. Their first game was about to begin.
Together, they dipped their shoulders under water and studied the
Sharks lined up opposite. They waited expectantly for the start.
They did not have to wait long.
The referee's hand dropped, as she let out another long
blast of the whistle. With her other hand, she slapped the
green ball onto the surface of the water. The Tigers raced for the
ball. The Sharks raced for the ball. Who would get there first?
The nearest player for the Tigers was Tiny Tracy. She put her head
down and swam faster than she had ever swum before. She was nearly
there. She reached under the ball, but her hand returned empty.
The ball flew into the air and away from her grasp. A Sharks' player,
Gary, had beaten her by a second. He grinned and raced past her.
Tracy turned and chased Gary. He was swimming with all his might.
Plop! The ball flew through the air and landed in front of Gary.
Tracy struggled to get close to him. She nearly caught up, but with
one quick movement Gary had lifted up the ball. The ball flew past
the goalkeeper's hand and into the net.
