Rules

Getting started

"NO RULES!
In fact, the fewer the rules you impose on players, the easier it is for them to learn and, more importantly, the more fun it is!

Use any space of water and turn it into a fun water ball game.
Use any small ball which is waterproof and floats.
If there are no goals then use floats, cones or plastic bottles filled with water.
If the pool is shallow, or the players cannot yet swim, then them stand up.
If players are not confident in the water, involve them by having their team score by passing them the ball whilst sat on the side." (ASA)

Put a ball in the water and start to play.

Rules for young club mini polo players

If you are running regular mini polo sessions, you can introduce a few rules like:

  • Do not walk on the bottom.
  • Pass with one hand.
  • Do not push the ball under.
  • No contact with other players. Go for the ball!
  • Go to your own half after a goal.
  • Do not splash other players.
  • Do not bounce the ball on the side (This is how to make balls last a few years!).

Getting ready for water polo

If you think players are nearly ready for water polo, You can introduce a few more rules like:

    • Catch and pass with one hand
    • Do not go inside 2m without the ball
    • You may press an attacker.
    • You may push a player's arm if they are holding the ball.
    • You may not hold back a player
    • You may not sink a player
    • You may not strike a player
    • You may not swim over a player
    • Keep your tummy button under the water

At this stage, you could start to introduce some contact in the form of eggbeater wars and press defense drills.
